Minions The Rise of GRU review would focus on almost all aspects of the computer-animated comedy movie. The movie is the Despicable Me franchise’s latest installment. Further, it serves as a sequel to the spin-off or prequel of the franchise, Minions, which was released in 2015. It narrates the adventure of Minions, the tiny bean-shaped silly nasty groups that are ebullient and uncontrollable. These mini yellow creatures have over time garnered a lot of attention and popularity which is undoubtedly commendable. This is because these cute minions are goofballs that attract everyone’s eyes on them and are a treat to watch.
The latest animated Minions movie is produced by Illuminati Entertainment just like other films in the franchise are. The distribution is done by Universal Pictures. The current installment in the franchise is loosely based on the first Minions movie that was released in 2010 and is an extension of the story of Gru and his cheerful companions.
The movie is set in a flamboyantly overwhelming edition of the late 70s. Vicious 6 are the quirkiest villains on the platform which includes the newly appointed leader Belle Bottom, Nunchunk (who manages nunchunks), Svengeance (a roller skater), a Stronghold (big metal hand owner), Jean-Clawyed (with a giant mechanical lobster claw on right arm), and the former leader Wild Knuckles. The Minions: The Rise of Gru release date was June 13, 2022, in Annecy and July 1, 2022, in the United States.
Minions The Rise of Gru Plot Summary
The animated comedy is actually an untold tale of a twelve-year-old boy’s dream to become the greatest supervillain in the entire world. It is set in the late 70s that begins with Gru amidst a swarm of flared jeans and feathered hair. He then devises a plan to become villainous enough in order to join the team of super villains, Vicious 6 that he adored a lot. Fortunately, he has backing from his loyal friends and followers, the Minions, for the plan that he formulated.
Gru, along with other Minions, including Stuart, Kevin, Bob, and a new Minion who had braces, Otto, had a strong will to please the Vicious 6. Therefore, they have amalgamated their efforts and put their abilities to use as they develop their first lair and test their first-ever weapon for success. Thereafter, when the Vicious 6 dethrone their leader, Wild Kunckles, Gru presents himself as a suitable candidate for their newest member.
However, nothing goes as expected and makes the situation worse as Gru outsmarts this ferociously evil squad and the group decides to kill him. While drifting away, Gru meets Wild Knuckles, which is an unfamiliar source of guidance for escaping. This encounter taught our little Gru that even evil people need their friends in times of need.
Minions The Rise of Gru Review: An Intense Comedy!
In the year 1976, Gru gets Minions to work for him and becomes their new leader. Everything goes as planned until one day Gru receives an invitation for the audition of the newest member of Vicious 6. Little did he know what would ensue. This development leaves the audience, especially children, in curiosity as to what would happen next. The movie then showcases how Belle Bottom dethroned Wild Knuckles and even tried killing him, which seemed to be successful but wasn’t.
The evil group also stole a stone prior to the attempted murder. These aspects maintain the element of surprise throughout the film, which is required to break the monotonicity of comedy by the small mango-hued Minions. The Minions The Rise of Gru Review is full of such instances and explanations that would help you in understanding each and every scene in the movie.
Gru’s interview didn’t go as expected but he somehow managed to steal the precious stone related to the Chinese zodiac. This made the Vicious 6 extremely furious and thirsty for Gru’s life as they tried in the case of Wild Knuckles. Here, the story takes a complete turn and changes the comedy atmosphere into something that’s a lot more serious. However, another interesting twist was Gru’s escape with Stuart, Kevin, and Bob.
Thereafter, he found that huge teethed Minion, Otto, who had braces, traded the precious stone (for which Gru risked his life) for a pet rock. This enraged him and he fired all the minions. He then set out all by himself to get the stone back. This again raises the question in the audience’s mind that whether or not Gru will get back the stone. Moreover, kids would be glued to the film thinking whether Gru would emerge safe or die in the hands of the Vicious 6.
The complete 360-degree turn in the story makes it difficult to predict what will happen next. From Gru being a fanboy of the evil gang, Vicious 6, to running for his life, the movie showed us all. Moreover, the introduction of a new character, Otto with huge teeth was fascinating as well since he looked comical and grabbed attention well. In addition, his mischief turned the story’s direction in the most unexpected manner.
When Bob, Stuart, and Kevin set out to find Gru despite being fired shows how loyal they were to him and how well he could count on them. This also teaches us a lesson that we should never leave our friend behind even if things are not right between us. Upon reaching Wild Knuckles’ residence, the trio is chased by a group of goons, which is kind of a deja-vu to Gru running for his life. This scene encompasses the story in an invisible loop.
Next, when they meet a former Kung Fu teacher, Master Chow, who saves them from the attackers, the trio decides to learn the art of Kung Fu from her. This scene shows their dedication to finding Gru and their determination to save him from any atrocity. The teaching classes are a relief from the tense scenes and happenings and are filmed in a comical way. Also, the expressions by Chow were definitely a cherry on the cake.
While the others head to Knuckles’ home, Otto chases a biker who has acquired the stone in form of a necklace. After a series of events, our big teethes hero is able to catch hold of the biker and gets the stone back, who then is dropped in San Francisco by the biker. This event is both humorous and worth learning about. This shows that not all people associated with the stone are bad and do have humane value left in them.
The biggest surprise comes after this when Gru starts to befriend Knuckles, which is completely unanticipated until this point. This situation arises as the latter’s companions leave him stranded after he was dethroned and Gru, who had nothing to do with him, saved him from a deadly crocodile attack. This scene is the highlight of the movie, which teaches us that even evil people need their friends to support them when they need them. But often these so-called ‘friends’ quit their job and run away.
The complications arose when the Vicious 6 destroyed Knuckles’ house as the three Minions broke in much earlier than they should have. The former Vicious 6 head decided to surrender, however, Gru takes it all on himself to stop those ferocious evils. This twist shows how responsible our main hero is and which kid doesn’t like his hero to fight all alone? The scene must excite kids the moment it is telecasted on the screen.
The comical integration within intense scenes doesn’t make it too hard on our eyes and brain. Therefore, the movie definitely becomes children friendly. Moreover, the Minions The Rise of Gru age rating is 5+, implying that anyone over five years of age can watch it. However, it is recommended that parents be cautious around children aged 5 to 8 years, who might not be familiar with any scary or violent elements.
The scene where Gru finally finds Otto with the stone satisfies your eyes, isn’t it? But don’t you think you might be celebrating too early since the moment they meet each other, we can see Vicious 6 spying on them. However, they are resisted by the Anti-Villain League. But all these efforts end in vain as the clock strikes midnight and the evil gang transforms into animals using the stone.
This scene might be disturbing for some children and the Minions: The Rise of Gru parents guide advises to watch it only in the presence of their parents. However, some older children might even find it interesting to see an unpredictable change in the story.
These animals then kidnapped Gru, thus increasing tension. They even planned to kill him at a clock tower out of vengeance. However, Stuart, Bob, and Kevin find Gru in time only to be converted into a rooster, a goat, and a rabbit, respectively. These evolutions seem hilarious in such a situation but also make the situation complicated, hence, giving mixed vibes.
The last action sequence is pleasing to those who love seeing such stuff. Minions defeating Vicious 6 and Knuckles joining them to defeat Bottom seems extremely interesting. However, the former Vicious 6 leader is severely burnt by the new one, another turning point. The heroes then get hold of the matter as Otto saves Gru and the stone is used to turn the evil gang into rats and is subsequently arrested along with Knuckles. It seems that Knuckles dies of his injuries but it is not so as he appears right after his funeral. These small surprising elements elevate the story as it nears its end.
The unexpected happenings don’t stop here and extend to the mid-credits scene, wherein Gru invites Dr. Netario to thank him for his invention that aided in stealing the Chinese zodiac stone. The latter at first hesitated but then joined on request on Gru and Minions. We are also given a hint of Gru using a jet in the future which is something the audience would always have at the back of their mind. It acts as a teaser for subsequent installments of the movie franchise.
In addition, Minions: The Rise of Gru rotten tomatoes rating is 6.20 out of 10 or 71%, which is considered fairly decent. However, the audience score is a huge 91%, or 4.5 out of 5 stars, which is considered excellent. Therefore, you can surely give it a try.
