WhatsApp, the popular messaging app owned by Meta Platforms Inc. (NYSE: FB), recently took action against several Indian accounts. WhatsApp ban in India efforts ceased nearly 22 lakh accounts registered in the country in June 2022. The move was taken in abidance with the new IT rules that were released in 2021. Earlier in May this year, the platform had taken down 19 lakh Indian accounts.
This messaging platform acquired about 632 complaints in India in the month of June. However, they managed to take action on only 64 such reports. Prior to that, in May it received 528 reports, out of which they managed to act on just 24. Therefore, in the course, many Indian WhatsApp accounts were banned.
A representative of the company talked about the WhatsApp ban in India efforts, in a statement said that:
"WhatsApp is an industry leader in preventing abuse, among end-to-end encrypted messaging services. Over the years, we have consistently invested in Artificial Intelligence and other state-of-the-art technology, data scientists and experts, and in processes, in order to keep our users safe on our platform."
The statement was released in compliance with Rule 4(1)(d) of the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021. The published report comprised information on the actions undertaken by the company in order to solve the grievances and complaints raised by Indian citizens.
Earlier when the rules came in last year, the company said that:
"This user-safety report contains details of the user complaints received and the corresponding action taken by WhatsApp as well as WhatsApp's own preventive actions to combat abuse on our platform."
Since then, the company has been working towards the initiative. The consumer reports were received through grievance mechanisms. WhatsApp account restrictions and bans were then initiated through the prevention and detection methods. These actions were taken against those who violated the terms and conditions of the messaging platform. The “Accounts Actioned” report shows the complaints that WhatsApp took action on.
