Dadasaheb Phalke Biopic “Made In India” By S.S. Rajamouli Announced

Recently, Indian film director and screenwriter S.S. Rajamouli has announced his upcoming biopic “Made In India”. The movie will be based on the life of Dadasaheb Phalke. Nitin Kakkar will be directing the production of Made In India, which marks the directorial debut of the veteran filmmaker, who is well-known for his work in the film industry, including Filmistaan and Mitron. Additionally, the production marks the debut of the son of renowned director and film producer S.S. Karthikeyan, who will be producing the film alongside his father, S.S.Rajamouli.
Rajamouli has released a trailer for his upcoming film, Made In India, which has been accompanied by a teaser. The director has yet to reveal any cast or other information regarding the project. He has expressed his emotional connection to the script after listening to its narrative.
He took to X, formerly Twitter, and wrote,
“When I first heard the narration, it moved me emotionally like nothing else. Making a biopic is tough in itself, but conceiving one about the FATHER OF INDIAN CINEMA is even more challenging. Our boys are ready and up for it.. With immense pride, Presenting ‘MADE IN INDIA’.”
The Father of Indian Cinema: Dadasaheb Phalke’s Early Life
Father of Indian Cinema, was born in Trimbak, Maharashtra. Dhundiraj Govinda Phalke’s real name is Dhundiraj Phalke. He is known as the ‘Father of Indian Cinema’ due to the fact that he shot the first ever full-length Indian film in 1913 titled ‘Raja Harishchandra’.
From an early age, Phalke had a keen interest in the arts. In 1885, he enrolled at the Sir JJ School Of Art, Mumbai (now Mumbai) with the aim of pursuing his artistic aspirations. There, he studied amateur drama, photography and lithography, architecture, and magic. During his brief career, he worked as a painter, set designer for a theater, and a photographer.
Ravi Varma’s paintings of Hindu gods left a lasting impression on Phalke while he worked at his lithographic press. This influence can be seen in his own depiction of various Gods and Goddesses in his mythological films.
One of the most important moments of Phalke’s life came when he accidentally watched the silent film ‘The Life of Christ’ (1910), which had a profound impact on Phalke, who made it his mission to bring all indian films to the big screen.
Dadasaheb Phalke, A Renowned Filmmaker, Is Known For Breaking Taboo
After traveling to London to study film with Cecil Hepworth, Phalke made his debut as a director in 1913 with the Indian film “Raja Harishchandra”, which was India’s first full-length film. What’s important about this film is that it was the first time a female actor was cast as the main character in Phalke’s 1913 film “Bhasmasur Mohini”.
In 1917, with the help of several partners, he established the Hindustan film company. He went on to direct 95 films and 27 short films in a career spanning 19 years.
With the introduction of sound in films and the expansion of the commercial side of the business, Phalke’s work lost popularity. His last silent film, ‘Setu Bandhan’, was released in 1932, after which he retired from film making and moved to Nashik. His last film, ‘Gangavataran’ (1937), was the only film in which he ever directed sound.
He died on 16 February 1944.
The central government honored the visionary in 1969 by establishing the ‘Dhankar Phalke Award’, a Lifetime Contribution to Indian Cinema.
