Bollywood is here with yet another attempt to glorify the LGBTQ community of India with the latest Badhaai Do movie. This film’s trailer that stars Bhumi Pednekar and Rajkumar Rao reveals how a lesbian woman and a gay man agree to marry each other in a small town in India. Ever since the release of the trailer, it has received overwhelming reviews. This is the basic Badhaai Do story.
Rajkumar Rao who plays the role of a gay policeman convinces a lesbian PT teacher, that is played by Bhumi to get married so that they get rid of their families. The idea of opposite sex homosexuals who get married to each other is often termed as “lavender marriage”. Have a look at the Dadhaai Do trailer.
Actor Bhumi Pednekar stated that her upcoming movie Badhaai Do speaks about “love and acceptance” via a sensitive vision, never employing its humor against the LGBTQ+ community to get cheap laughs.
This movie is billed as a spiritual sequel to the 2018 National Award Winning film, Badhaai Ho. In an interview, Bhumi said that she agreed to sign the movie half way via its narration as she understood the potential of this film to talk to a broader audience. She said,
"What really jumped out for me was that it is a big franchise which stands for speaking about things that usually make people uncomfortable, but something that we need to accept and normalize. There is a lot of humor in the film, even in the narration I could not stop laughing. But the humor is not degrading, not there to titillate. It is not at the expense of the community.”
The actor who is known for her socially relevant cinemas like Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare, Bala, and Shubh Mangal Saavdhan stated that this film came to her without any dos and don’ts.
Pednekar further states that the full team of this movie, director Harshvardhan Kulkarni, writers Akshat Ghildia and Suman Adhikar were completely aware of portraying a crucial story with maturity on screen. She said that,
"There was a lot of sensitivity about the LGBTQI community, which is something I really respected. That came from the writing and the direction. There was not a lot for me to be alert about, which tells you about the maturity and the thinking that has gone behind the writing.”
She further added that,
"When I heard the narration, it was done so well, there was no reason for me to say, 'We should not create a joke about the community. You have to show the society the way it is because that's the only way we would be able to achieve the change we hope we do, but there is no digging. It is a very sensitive film.”
With Sumi who is a 32 year old character, Bhumi found a chance to enact a vulnerable character, a deviation from her strong willed parts like Durgamati and Saand Ki Aankh. Her character is of someone who is looking for love. Bhumi then adds,
"Sumi is genuinely inspirational. What truly excited me as an actor was that I saw her vulnerabilities. I have played a lot of strong willed women, women who are out there to get it, but that's not the case for everyone. Everybody has their coming of age, through experiences you find courage. I saw her do that." Bhumi Pednekar said the film is ultimately a celebration of love, accepting oneself, and overcoming fears.”
She further added that,
"It is not easy. One can easily say 'come out, let people know who you are', but it is a journey. It is a film about your family accepting you for who you are, about understanding that love at the end of the day is about two individuals, irrespective of any kind of social conditioning we have gone through over the years.”
